Welcome to the Haiti Medical Mission Page. In the spring of 1996, a group from St. Francis, including Fr. Don, Pat Labuda, Bernie McLaughlin, Mike Goggin, our youth minister, and Dr. Frank Nice, a pharmacist at NIH, went to Leon. The next year, Frank set up out first Medical Mission consisting of 6 volunteers. Through the grace of God and the prayers and support of the people of St. Francis, this medical mission has grown substantially. Our Medical Mission now goes to Haiti three times a year for two weeks or more. A team of volunteers covers each of the weeks. Each team normally consists of 12-14 people- a balance of doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, EMTs, lab technicians, and support people. A total of 24-48 volunteers is needed for each medical mission. We have volunteers from all over the United States including Alaska.
All the volunteers pay their own travel expenses. Lodging and meals are provided by our sister parish of St. Paul's Parish in Leon-the location of the Medical Mission. St. Paul's has been our sister parish in Haiti since 1987-part of the Parish Twinning Program of the Americas. Approximately 2000 patients are seen during each mission and approximately 10,000 prescriptions are dispensed. The medicines are purchased from various medical mission suppliers in the U.S. and from a commercial pharmaceutical supplier in Haiti. Donations of professional samples are also part of the pharmaceutical cache. The total cost for a two week mission is approximately $10,000. This is made possible from the generosity of the St. Francis of Assisi parishioners and other benefactors. Our parishioners also provide significant support to the needs of St. Paul's-operation of the church and school, in particular.
