Rebuilding Together

Again, this April, St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Derwood sponsored a home under the Rebuilding Together program. About 40 men, women and teenagers from the parish worked to make repairs to the home of an elderly couple, one with a disability, in Sandy Spring, MD.

The biggest problem in the home was the rotted kitchen and dining room floor. A small group from the parish came in the weekend prior to the main work day to tear up the flooring and plywood subfloor and replace the plywood. Some of these same people came back the weekend after the main project day to lay the finish flooring. People repaired plumbing, doors and windows, walls, and other miscellaneous problems in the home. When the repairs were finished, most of the interior of the home received a new coat of paint.

As is usually the case in projects like this, certain enhancements for safety such as grab bars in the bathroom and hand railings on the stairs were installed.

Many people that could not participate on project day helped out by donating supplies and other gifts for a gift basket that was presented to the family at the end of the project. The homeowner seemed delighted with the work that was done to the house, and the participants felt a genuine feeling of accomplishment in their excellent work.

SOCIAL CONCERNS PRAYER
Lord, Open Our Eyes
Lord, open our eyes,
That we may see you in
our brothers and sisters.
Lord, open our ears,
That we may hear the cries
of the hungry, the cold,
the frightened, the oppressed.
Lord, open our hearts,
That we may love each other
as you love us.
Renew in us your spirit
Lord, free us and make us one.
