SERVICE Opportunities

For Teens            
3rd Thursday at the Lord's Table – On the 3rd Thursday of every month from 3 to 5pm serve a hot meal to the hungry at St. Martin of Tours soup kitchen – The Lord’s Table. Service time = 2 hours and space is limited to 4 volunteers.

Gaithersburg Help is in need of people to work in their food pantry handing out food, Monday through Friday evenings: 5:30 – 7:30pm or 6 – 8pm. Younger teens should be accompanied by an adult. For more info, call Marge Canik, 301-963-3565.
 
Concert Assistants – Provide assistance at the St. Francis concert events by setting up (12-2pm), handing out programs, seating patrons, serving at intermission, and cleaning up (7-9/10pm). Service time = 2-3 hours. Concerts are usually scheduled on Saturday nights from 7:30-9/9:30pm. Concert admission is free for assistants that volunteer 2 hrs or reduced for partial night assistants. Bingo Assistants –  Friday nights from 7-10 p.m. Bingo assistants needed to verify Bingo and help the patrons. Age 16 and up. Contact: Sue Lea at 301-948-9167 or SFAYouth@sfadw.org.
 
Rebuilding Together – Help restore a home owned by low-income resident, with special focus on the elderly, disabled, and/or families with children, residing in Montgomery County. Special skills: Any experience working on houses is a plus. Time: 4-12 hrs on the fourth Saturday in April or as needed when projects come up throughout the year. Religious Education Classroom Aide –Assist as a classroom aide in a Pre-K, Kindergarten, or Grade 1-5 Religious Education class. Opportunities are available on Sunday morning or Monday afternoon. Volunteer for a single class, for several classes, or every week. Or, serve as a volunteer for occasional special projects planned for the Religious Education program. Vacation Bible Camp Youth Volunteer – Serve as Counselor or Counselor-in-Training for the parish Vacation Bible Camp usually offered in late June. Alternative Christmas – Staffing the Alternative Christmas shopping table after the Masses in late November/early December. Service time: 1-3 hours. Contact: Pat O'Connor @ leafs20879@aol.com or 301-977-9208.
 
Mini-Walk for the Homeless – Teens are needed to help organize our Fannie Mae Mini-Walk for the Homeless Service time: 2-3 hours. Please contact Charles McCarthy, 301-840-1407, cmccarthy@sfadw.org.
 
Baskets of Cheer – Assemble and/or deliver baskets of cookies and goodies for the poor at Christmas. Assembly service time is up to 4 hours. Deliver baskets to Little Sisters of the Poor Nursing home. Service time = 2-3 hours. Contact Sue for more details at 301-948-9167 or SFAYouth@sfadw.org.
 
Catholic HEART Work Camp – Location Providence RI – 6/27- 7/2 2010 - A week of service, fellowship, and worship. Each day will be spent renewing homes by doing such things as painting, cleaning, yard work, and minor home repairs; or helping at day care centers for low-income families by assisting with the children’s programs, working at homeless shelters or helping at centers that distribute food to the needy. Encounter the Gospel of Life – July 11-16, 2010 -This work camp will require more from you than you expect. But, if you are serious about your faith, your baptismal call and our Gospel Message, this will exceed your expectations. Held at University of Maryland College Park. Work sites include places like homeless shelters, soup kitchens, children’s day camps, senior and special care settings and possibly legislative and advocacy sites. You will get to know the people who actually work at these places everyday. Earn 40 Service hours. Contact Sue Lea at 301-948-9167 or email SFAYouth@sfadw.org.
